A Review of I Am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes

I Am Pilgrim: A Thriller

by Terry Hayes

This is the best audiobook that I listened to this year. If you haven’t read it yet, what are you waiting for? It’s a big book, and a long audiobook, but it never drags. Most of the book is not a typical fast-paced thriller. Mr. Hayes spends the time to allow you to get to know his two main protagonists, Pilgrim and the Saracen, and the reasons that they think and act the way they do. You find out, a story at a time, about their childhoods and how they grew up to become two secrets in a world of information. You understand who they are, and why they need to do what they do. You follow their paths until they finally meet in a horrific confrontation in a Turkish ruins.

This is a great first book, written by a former journalist. He really knows how to tell a story. It reminded me of the best books by Robert Ludlum. You really get to know and understand the motivations of the two main characters. You see the world though their eyes. You understand what they are doing and why they must continue along this path that is bound to end badly. There is a logic and sense to the story, and it isn’t painted in stereotypes. Pilgrim and the Saracen aren’t good and bad. They are people. They do what they feel they must do.

“If you want to be free, all you have to do is let go.” – a Buddhist monk.

I give I Am Pilgrim 5 Stars out of 5, and Two Big Thumbs Up! If you only read one International Suspense Thriller this year, this is the one you should read. I can’t recommend it too strongly. Put it on the top of your “Books To Read” list.

Book Description

I-Am-PilgrimCan you commit the perfect crime?

Pilgrim is the codename for a man who doesn’t exist. The adopted son of a wealthy American family, he once headed up a secret espionage unit for US intelligence. Before he disappeared into anonymous retirement, he wrote the definitive book on forensic criminal investigation.

But that book will come back to haunt him. It will help NYPD detective Ben Bradley track him down. And it will take him to a rundown New York hotel room where the body of a woman is found facedown in a bath of acid, her features erased, her teeth missing, her fingerprints gone. It is a textbook murder – and Pilgrim wrote the book.

What begins as an unusual and challenging investigation will become a terrifying race-against-time to save America from oblivion. Pilgrim will have to make a journey from a public beheading in Mecca to a deserted ruins on the Turkish coast via a Nazi death camp in Alsace and the barren wilderness of the Hindu Kush in search of the faceless man who would commit an appalling act of mass murder in the name of his God. – See more at: I Am Pilgrim
